How much does an EV charging station cost to install?

The cost of an EV charging station is not a single figure but the sum of several items: the charger, installation, documentation (assessment and design) and the billing system. Below, we break them down and show why, in a multi-family building, the biggest savings come not from the hardware but from a joint design and a shared connection — done together with your neighbours.

What makes up the cost

The final amount is driven by four main items. Their proportions depend on the site: one charger at a house looks very different from several points in an apartment block’s underground car park.

  • Charger: from approx. 2,000 zł for a simple AC wallbox to approx. 6,000 zł for a model with a MID meter, connectivity and OCPP.
  • Installation including materials: usually 3,500–6,000 zł — the electrician’s labour plus cables, protective devices and fittings from the switchboard to the parking space.
  • Assessment and design: 3,000 zł net for the first point and only 330 zł net for each additional one in the same property.
  • Billing system: 30 zł net a month for the first charger and 10 zł net for each additional one, with no commission on energy.

The price ranges for devices and installation are indicative — they depend on the manufacturer, model and conditions in the building. We will prepare an exact quote individually.

How much the charger itself costs and what drives the price

A simple AC wallbox (7.4–11 kW) without advanced features starts at approx. 1,500–2,500 zł. A model with metering, connectivity and support for management systems usually costs approx. 3,000–6,000 zł. Fast DC chargers cost many times more and are rarely used in homes or garages.

In a multi-unit building, it is worth choosing a model from the outset that lets you bill consumption reliably. The price of a device depends mainly on its features:

  • MID meter — certified energy metering, essential for reliably billing residents.
  • Connectivity — Wi‑Fi, LTE or RS485/Modbus, enabling remote reading, monitoring and updates.
  • OCPP support — an open standard that lets you connect the charger to a management system (e.g. Domena Power) regardless of manufacturer.
  • Authorisation (app or RFID card) and dynamic load balancing — convenience and safe sharing of the available power.
  • Power and type — 7.4/11/22 kW alternating current (AC) or much more expensive DC chargers.

How much installation and documentation cost

Installation including materials (cables, protective devices, fittings, cable trays) usually costs 3,500–6,000 zł. The amount depends on the distance from the switchboard, the length and routing of the cable, penetrations through walls and floors, and the protective devices required. In an underground car park, cable trays and fire-safety requirements are often added.

In a multi-family building, installation is preceded by an assessment and design, which confirm that the installation can handle the chargers and determine how to connect them safely. The full documentation package costs 3,000 zł net (3,690 zł gross) for the first point. If sign-off by a fire-safety expert is needed, there is a one-off additional 800 zł net (984 zł gross).

Why it pays to do it with your neighbours

The largest part of the documentation cost relates to analysing the building: checking the connection, switchboard, available power and fire-safety conditions. This work is done once — regardless of whether the design covers one point or ten. That is why each additional point in the same property costs only 330 zł net (405.90 zł gross), and the cost per person drops sharply:

  • 1 point — 3,000 zł net (3,690 zł gross) paid by one person.
  • 5 points — 4,320 zł net in total, i.e. 864 zł net (1,062.72 zł gross) per person.
  • 10 points — 5,970 zł net in total, i.e. 597 zł net (734.31 zł gross) per person — five times less than going it alone.
  • The fire-safety sign-off (800 zł net) is done once for the whole project, so it is also shared among all participants.
  • A shared cable route and switchboard — work that is repeated every time with individual installations is done once, and the cost is spread across everyone.
  • A cheaper billing system — with 10 chargers the subscription is 120 zł net a month, i.e. 12 zł net (14.76 zł gross) per point instead of 30 zł net on your own.

The calculations apply to the full documentation package (assessment + design) for points in one property, according to the current price list. The installation cost depends on the building layout and is quoted individually.

A shared connection instead of separate ones

The alternative to a joint design is everyone “sorting it out themselves”: a separate connection or a separate metered circuit for each resident. In an apartment block, this is usually the most expensive route. Each person goes through the grid operator’s procedure separately, pays for their own documentation and installation, and often for a separate distribution contract as well. Rigidly reserved power soon runs out, and the next residents are told the building has no power left.

A shared connection or common circuit with dynamic load balancing (DLB) solves this problem. The system shares the available power between the cars that are actually charging at any given moment, so the same connection can support many times more points — without costly increases in connection capacity. Each charger has its own MID meter and the system assigns consumption to the unit, so each resident still pays only for their own charging.

A joint design also takes into account the target number of points. The installation is prepared with headroom, and neighbours who buy an electric car later can join without repeating the whole procedure.

Whether the connection capacity can be increased, and at what cost, depends on the grid operator and the specific building. We confirm this after analysing the installation.

What most often drives the cost up

  • A long distance from the switchboard and a complicated cable route, e.g. across several garage levels.
  • No power headroom, which without load balancing forces an increase in the building’s connection capacity.
  • “One point at a time” installation — each charger with separate documentation, from a different contractor and to a different standard.
  • Additional fire-safety requirements in underground car parks.
  • Choosing a charger without a MID meter and OCPP, which later has to be replaced to bill consumption reliably.

Billing cost: a commission-free model

In the Domena Power model, you pay a flat management subscription: 30 zł net (36.90 zł gross) a month for the first charger and 10 zł net (12.30 zł gross) for each additional one, with no commission on energy sales. Each user pays for their own sessions based on metering, and the housing community doesn’t pay for anyone else’s charging.

Calculate the cost of your documentation

Enter the number of charging points and we will calculate the net and gross amount incl. 23% VAT.

Additional points within a single documentation set are cheaper: the first point is the full assessment and design, and each further one is only +330 zł net — the more points, the lower the cost per point.

Frequently asked questions

  • On documentation, potentially several times over. On your own you pay 3,000 zł net for the assessment and design, while each additional point in the same property costs only 330 zł net. With 10 points, that is 597 zł net per person. On top of that, the cost of the shared cable route and fire-safety sign-off is split, and the billing system subscription works out cheaper.
